The Olympic Games will open in Beijing two years from today, on 8 August 2008. China is pulling out all the stops to host an athletic and cultural spectacle so extravagant that the world simply forgets its systematic human rights violations and the situation in Tibet. But you and I know that this approach is inherently flawed - only genuine progress on human rights will allow the spirit of the Games to flourish, free from controversy.

China has a historic opportunity to show the world that it is a worthy host of the 2008 Olympics. But time is critical and the countdown to the Games has begun.
